‘The NEBRA SKY DISC is one of the most important archaeological finds of the past century and found in Germany. It shows the world’s oldest concrete depiction of astronomical phenomena that we know.

Elements of the day and night sky mingle in front of an abstract network of stars. The sun and moon are not only depicted in their heavenly course but also explained. A boat appears between the horizons on a nocturnal voyage across the celestial ocean. It is here for the first time recorded as a central mythical symbol in Europe. The Sky Disc gives us an insight into the knowledge of our ancestors about the course of the world and its religious interpretation 3,600 years ago.’ Juraj Lipták.

This fascinated me so much that I wanted to immortalize this beautiful element in a bag design. I chose a dark and blue-green denim fabric that perfectly matches the original. The gold elements, which originally came from Cornwall, UK, were embossed onto the bag using a special technique. I echoed the circular holes of the disc with small beads. For the decorative topstitching and seams, I chose a gold and silver metallic thread that frames the disc in a special light. The shoulder strap, which sparkles like a soft starry night, is held in place by two brass elements. I incorporated another brass element into the design to commemorate the missing piece of the original. The lining is black and features a pocket, and the bag closes with a magnetic snap held by a crescent moon. 

I sincerely hope that I have been able to describe what I felt during the detailed creation process and that this special archaeological find moves you as it does me. This bag is a truly unique piece and holds special meaning for me.
